Off the Beaten Path

Sleepy John Estes' Home in Brownsville
The home of one of the world's most famous blues musicians has been partially reconstructed on site at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center and filled with memorabilia of Sleepy John and Brownsville blues men Yank Rachell and Hammie Nixon, who played with Sleepy John Estes.

National Bird Dog Museum
The National Bird Dog Museum in Grand Junction is a repository of information, art, photography, and memorabilia reflecting a variety of pointing dog and retriever breeds, hunting, field trial activities, and shooting sports.

Old Spencer Mill in Burns
Dickson county boasts one of the last all-original, dual stone gristmills in Tennessee. The Old Spencer Mill on Parker’s creek has an interesting history with reported ties to the famous Comanche Chief Quanah Parker. Today cornmeal is ground onsite and a banquet hall is available for gatherings. Located 30 minutes west of Nashville.

Red Boiling Springs
Travel back in time over covered bridges and Tennessee countryside to relax at one of the three remaining Victorian era hotels built to cater to guests visiting for the mineral water springs in the area. Cordell Hull Lake, wineries, unique shopping opportunities and more are just a stones throw away.

Dunlap Coke Ovens Park
Dunlap Coke Ovens Park, located in Sequatchie County, features the remnants of an early coal mining and coke production operation. You may tour the remains of 268 beehive coke ovens used to convert coal into coke for use in the iron and steel foundries of nearby Chattanooga.

Historic Rugby
This restored Victorian village was founded in 1880 by British author and social reformer, Thomas Hughes. It was to be a cooperative, class-free, agricultural community for younger sons of English gentry and others wishing to start life anew in America. At its peak, some 350 people lived in the colony. More than 70 buildings of Victorian design graced the East Tennessee townscape. Today 20 of the original structures remain.
